KC Discover on Instagram: "RideKC’s replacement of traditional benches with leaning benches has sparked dissatisfaction among many community members. The transportation service has installed ADA-compliant “leaning benches” at 12th & Grand, 11th & Grand, and the East Village Transit Center, emphasizing their ease of maintenance, cost-effectiveness, and accessibility. However, numerous community members are condemning the transportation service for allegedly replacing the benches to keep homeless individuals away, thereby leaving disabled individuals without a place to sit. Comments from the community can be seen below : - “This sh*t is for the birds literally 🦅🤣” —————————— - “They tryna clean up downtown for the World Cup! SMH🤬🤬🤬” —————————— - “Don’t make a post drawing attention to how you DON’T have seating benches available.” —————————— - “These benches are easy to maintain, cost-effective, and built for accessibility.” … are the benches in the room with us? Ya’ll weren’t embarrassed enough by pulling out the benches and building this that you went so far as to embarrass yourselves further with this post.” ———————————————————— - “Imagine being proud of this and thinking you’re providing an “amenity” when you could just build a bench. How is a disabled person who might have trouble standing supposed to find this useful? Not to mention non-disabled people also like to sit down. Meanwhile, bus stops all over town, but particularly on the east side, are literally just poles in the ground next to busy streets. No “amenities” there, no benches, no shelter at all from rain or sun. The disrespect RideKC has for its riders and this city is galling. Whoever came up with this little patronizing ploy should be fired.” ———————————————————— - “wow thanks i cant wait to get off a long shift of standing on my feet to go slightly lean on something at the bus stop while i wait to go home 🤩”."
