One person was killed and two were injured after gunfire erupted during a funeral at a Kearns church.

Assistant Chief Justin Hoyal with the Unified Police Department said they had received a call early Monday morning requesting a police presence at the church near 5000 South 4600 West.

Officers were at the scene when shots were fired just before 11:30 a.m. Hoyal said officers responded immediately and found one man with critical injuries.

Medical personnel provided life-saving aid before the man could be taken to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Officers found a second victim being carried away to a vehicle. Despite commands to stop, the individuals got into a car and fled the scene. After a brief chase, the car was stopped near 4700 South and 4000 West.
